Singapore’s Favourite Multi-Split Is Also the Most Misunderstood

Walk any HDB estate in Singapore and count the Mitsubishi Electric Starmex logos on aircon ledges. Between Tampines, Punggol, Jurong East and Woodlands, Starmex is probably the single most common multi-split system installed in our HDB and condo flats. The smaller Mitsubishi Heavy Industries SRK lineup shows up less often but has a loyal following among homeowners who want Japanese build quality at a slightly friendlier price. What trips up almost every generalist aircon provider is this: Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are two different companies with two different service cultures. Treating them as one brand is how half-hearted servicing happens.

CoolX Aircon was founded in 2016 by Mr Kok Wai Keong after 15 years of hands-on industry experience. The company has since completed over 2,400 projects across residential HDB estates, condominiums and commercial premises. Mitsubishi Electric makes up a meaningful share of our weekly service volume, and we hold authorised service and installation partner status with them. That matters because it means our procedures are current with Mitsubishi’s service bulletins and our warranty support runs through proper channels.

Why Authorised Matters for Starmex Owners

Mitsubishi Electric’s factory warranty, like every major brand, is tied to how the unit is serviced, not just who installed it. Using an authorised service partner means:

  • Parts replacement uses OEM-compatible components
  • Service procedures follow Mitsubishi’s published technical bulletins
  • R32 and R410A refrigerant handling complies with NEA guidelines
  • Any warranty claim raised on your behalf is processed smoothly through Mitsubishi’s service channels

CoolX Aircon meets these criteria and our team holds NEA certification as refrigerant handlers, BCA ME01 contractor registration and bizSAFE Level 3 workplace safety certification. If your Starmex is still inside its factory warranty period, that paperwork matters.

Mitsubishi Electric Starmex: What We Check Every Visit

The Starmex Family in Singapore

Starmex ranges from System 1 for a single room to System 5 for five rooms sharing one outdoor condenser. Most Singapore homes run System 3 or System 4. The compact outdoor unit is what makes Starmex such a good fit for tight HDB aircon ledges and condo service yards. Inverter compressors are standard, indoor noise is low, and Plasma Quad Connect filtration is offered on premium models.

Plasma Quad Connect Filter

Mitsubishi’s Plasma Quad Connect captures fine particles, bacteria and allergens through a combination of electrostatic charging and filtration. It is a genuine premium feature but it depletes over time. During servicing we inspect the filter condition and clean or replace it as needed. A fully clogged Plasma Quad not only reduces air quality but also restricts airflow, forcing the fan to work harder and reducing cooling efficiency.

i-See 3D Sensor

On premium Starmex models, the i-See 3D sensor detects occupant positions in the room and adjusts airflow direction for personalised comfort. We verify sensor operation during servicing because a malfunctioning i-See sends airflow to where nobody is sitting, which is worse than no sensor at all.

Compact Indoor Unit Challenge

Starmex indoor units are designed for tight wall footprints, which means the evaporator coil and blower wheel are packed closer together than in bulkier brands. Thorough cleaning is especially important here, because a small amount of dust buildup in a compact chassis restricts airflow more dramatically than in a roomier unit. This is one of the reasons Starmex benefits from an annual chemical wash rather than relying on surface cleaning alone.

Common Starmex Issues in Singapore

  • Error code blinking patterns - Communication fault, sensor fault, or inverter fault
  • Drain pump wear - Some Starmex condo installs use a drain pump; pumps wear and need replacement
  • Inverter PCB faults - The inverter board controls compressor speed and can fail after power surges
  • Trunking condensation - Deteriorated piping insulation can drip water that looks like a unit leak

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries SRK: A Different Engineering Philosophy

About the SRK Range

MHI’s SRK series offers robust cooling performance with a reputation for durability at a slightly friendlier price point than Starmex. The series is well represented in residential and light commercial installations across Singapore, including Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems for commercial buildings.

SRK-Specific Service Points

Allergen Clear filter. MHI’s own air filtration system. We clean and inspect at every service visit.

Self-Clean coil dry function. Newer SRK models include an automatic coil drying cycle that runs after the unit shuts off, reducing mould growth on the evaporator coil. We verify this function is working, because a malfunctioning self-clean can ironically worsen moisture retention.

Jet Air rapid cooling mode. MHI’s signature powerful airflow setting. If jet air is underperforming, it usually points to a fan motor issue or a PCB fault rather than simple dust buildup.

Multi-Split Servicing Discipline

Both Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries offer multi-split systems that dominate Singapore HDB and condo living rooms. Servicing a multi-split correctly requires understanding the relationship between multiple indoor units and the shared outdoor condenser:

  • Each indoor unit is serviced individually with the same thoroughness as a single-split
  • The outdoor condenser serves all indoor units and needs its own maintenance
  • Refrigerant pressure must be balanced across all connected branches after any intervention
  • A fault in the outdoor unit affects cooling in every connected room

CoolX Aircon recommends servicing all indoor units in a multi-split system at the same time along with the outdoor unit. That keeps performance balanced across your entire home and is more cost-effective than servicing units on separate visits. See our servicing price list for multi-unit discounts.

Reading Mitsubishi LED Error Codes

Both Mitsubishi brands use LED indicator lights to communicate faults, though the specific patterns differ. Common fault categories include:

  • Communication errors between indoor and outdoor units
  • Sensor failures on thermistors, humidity or presence sensors
  • Motor faults on fan motor, compressor motor or drain pump
  • Electrical issues from overcurrent, voltage irregularities or PCB failures
  • Refrigerant issues detected as high or low pressure

When an error appears, note which lights are blinking and the pattern (fast, slow, number of blinks). WhatsApp us the pattern with a photo of the unit and we will usually know what to bring before dispatching a technician.

Keeping a Mitsubishi Running Past 10 Years

Both Mitsubishi brands build systems that reward proper maintenance with long life. With quarterly servicing, an annual chemical wash and a chemical overhaul every few years, it is common to see Mitsubishi units running strong past 10 years in Singapore conditions. The investment in regular care pays back through:

  • Extended compressor life
  • Consistent cooling performance
  • Lower SP utility bills
  • Fewer emergency call-outs
  • Better indoor air quality for your household

Mitsubishi FAQ

What is the difference between Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries?
They are two separate companies under the broader Mitsubishi group with completely different engineering teams, product lines and service documentation. Mitsubishi Electric produces the Starmex series, sits at a premium price point and features technologies like Plasma Quad and the i-See 3D sensor. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries produces the SRK series, typically priced a little lower with strong cooling performance and features like jet-air mode and self-clean. Both are reliable Japanese brands, but you cannot cross-reference their service procedures.
How often should a Mitsubishi aircon be serviced in Singapore?
Quarterly for residential use. Mitsubishi systems are built to last but Singapore's 85 percent humidity and long daily run hours mean regular maintenance is not optional. For Starmex multi-split systems we recommend servicing all indoor units in the same visit so we can balance the shared refrigerant circuit properly.
My Starmex is blinking an error. What do the patterns mean?
Blinking LEDs on a Starmex indicate specific error codes. Common patterns include fast blinks on the operation light (communication error between indoor and outdoor), the timer light flashing (sensor fault or thermistor issue) and the standby light flashing (inverter or compressor fault). Count the blinks over 10 seconds and WhatsApp us the pattern on 9051 7637 along with your model number for a preliminary diagnosis.
Does CoolX Aircon stock Mitsubishi spare parts?
Yes. Our vans carry commonly needed parts for current Starmex and SRK models: thermistors, capacitors, drain pumps, fan motors, remote receivers and PCB boards for popular configurations. Less common parts are sourced within 1 to 3 working days through authorised supply channels.
Can you service a Starmex multi-split if one room is not cooling properly?
Yes, and this is a common call-out. When one room in a Starmex system cools poorly while other rooms are fine, the fault is usually in the single indoor unit: dirty coil, blocked filter, jammed fan blade or a local drain issue. When all rooms cool poorly, the fault is typically in the outdoor unit or the shared refrigerant charge. We diagnose which is which during a troubleshooting visit from S$40 to S$50.
Will third-party servicing void my Mitsubishi factory warranty?
Standard servicing performed by an authorised service partner does not void factory warranty. CoolX Aircon is an authorised Mitsubishi Electric service and installation partner, and our methods comply with Mitsubishi guidelines. For parts covered under factory warranty we coordinate with Mitsubishi's service channels on your behalf.
