Your Aircon Is Trying to Tell You Something

A healthy aircon in Singapore should produce only two sounds: a gentle rush of air through the indoor vent and a barely audible hum from the outdoor condenser fan. Anything else, rattling, buzzing, grinding, clicking, hissing or dripping, is your unit telling you something mechanical or electrical is out of specification. Most of these problems get cheaper to fix the earlier you catch them and more expensive the longer you ignore them.

CoolX Aircon has been diagnosing noisy aircon systems across Singapore since our founding in 2016 by Mr Kok Wai Keong, who brought 15 years of prior industry experience into the business. Our team has since completed over 2,400 projects and developed a strong pattern recognition for aircon noise signatures. That experience matters because noise diagnosis is a listening skill. The difference between a worn bearing and a loose fan blade is not obvious to a generalist, but it determines whether you need a S$60 tightening job or a S$200 motor replacement.

Send Us a Voice Recording First

Before booking a visit, WhatsApp us a short voice recording of the noise on 9051 7637. The recording does not need to be professional. Just stand close to the indoor or outdoor unit, record for 15 to 30 seconds, and send it over. Experienced ears can often narrow down the likely cause before we even dispatch a technician, which means we arrive with the correct parts in the van and the site visit completes faster. This is the single most effective thing you can do to shorten a noisy aircon repair.

The Noise Signatures We Diagnose

Different noises point to different problems. Here is what each signature usually means in Singapore homes.

Rattling or Clattering

Where you hear it: Indoor unit housing or outdoor condenser ledge

Usual causes:

  • Loose mounting screws on the indoor unit bracket or housing
  • Fan blade that has slipped on its shaft
  • Debris inside the outdoor unit (leaves, twigs, insects, small objects)
  • Loose front panel or grille clips
  • Compressor mounting bolts that have loosened over years

Urgency: Low to moderate. Most rattling is resolved in 30 to 45 minutes with tightening or debris removal, but ignoring it can accelerate loosening and damage adjacent components.

Buzzing or Electrical Hum

Where you hear it: Usually the outdoor unit, sometimes the indoor PCB area

Usual causes:

  • Failing contactor relay (the electrical switch that controls the compressor)
  • Loose or corroded terminal connections causing low-level arcing
  • Transformer buzz from the indoor control board
  • Early compressor motor winding deterioration

Urgency: Moderate to high. Electrical issues can cascade into compressor failure and in rare cases create a safety concern. Book a prompt diagnosis.

Grinding or Scraping

Where you hear it: Indoor blower or outdoor fan motor

Usual causes:

  • Worn bearings in the fan motor: lubricant has dried out and metal surfaces are in contact
  • Blower wheel rubbing against the housing because dust buildup has shifted its balance
  • Warped outdoor fan blade contacting the protective grille

Urgency: High. Grinding means metal-on-metal contact, which accelerates wear rapidly. If the motor seizes, a cheap bearing job becomes an expensive motor replacement. Stop running the unit on high fan speed and call us.

Clicking

Where you hear it: Indoor or outdoor unit at startup or shutdown

Usual causes:

  • Normal relay engagement (1 or 2 clicks is expected)
  • Repeated continuous clicking without the compressor starting: failing capacitor or starter relay
  • Plastic housing thermal expansion and contraction (normal, usually mild)
  • PCB relay cycling due to sensor faults

Urgency: Low if occasional and the unit otherwise runs normally. High if clicking is continuous or the compressor never kicks in.

Hissing or Bubbling

Where you hear it: Indoor piping joints, outdoor service valves

Usual causes:

  • Refrigerant leak at a flare joint, braze joint or valve
  • Normal refrigerant flow sounds through the expansion valve
  • Air contamination from an improper repair or installation

Urgency: Moderate. Distinguishing between normal refrigerant flow and an actual leak needs calibrated gauges and an electronic leak detector. Our NEA-certified refrigerant handlers carry both.

Water Splashing or Dripping from the Indoor Unit

Where you hear it: Inside the indoor unit

Usual causes:

  • Condensate water dripping onto the fan blade because the drain pan is overflowing
  • Ice melting and dropping onto fan components

Urgency: Moderate. This is usually a drainage or low-gas issue. See our aircon leaking water service for a more detailed breakdown.

How We Carry Out the Fix

Our approach is methodical. We run the unit through every fan speed and mode, listening first with the outdoor condenser running and then with just the indoor blower, to pin the noise to its source component. Once identified, the fix is one of the following:

  • Loose components: Tighten mounting hardware, bracket bolts, panel clips with correct torque
  • Worn bearings: Lubricate or replace the fan motor depending on wear degree
  • Blower imbalance: Fully clean the blower wheel to remove accumulated dust causing wobble
  • Outdoor vibration: Install rubber anti-vibration pads between the unit and bracket, tighten condenser bolts
  • Electrical noise: Replace the failed contactor, capacitor, or relay
  • Debris: Remove foreign objects from the outdoor condenser housing
  • Refrigerant hissing: Locate and seal the leak, then recharge to factory specification

Outdoor Unit Noise in HDB Flats Deserves Special Attention

HDB outdoor unit noise is a sensitive topic because units sit close together on shared aircon ledges and compressor vibration transmits through concrete into adjacent bedrooms. Whether your flat is an older block in Toa Payoh, a BTO in Punggol or a resale in Tampines, the same physics applies. Effective solutions include:

  • Anti-vibration rubber mounting pads beneath the outdoor unit
  • Adequate wall clearance between the unit and ledge surrounds
  • Correctly torqued mounting bolts (not overtightened)
  • Replacement of worn compressor mounts in older installations

If your neighbour has complained about your outdoor unit, these measures typically resolve the issue in a single visit. We can also assess whether the compressor itself has grown noisier due to internal wear, which would point to a deeper repair decision.

Keep It Quiet With Regular Maintenance

Most noise issues are preventable with routine servicing:

  • Quarterly servicing tightens accessible hardware and inspects fan components - see our servicing price list
  • Annual chemical wash removes blower wheel dust that causes imbalance
  • Refrigerant charge checks prevent ice formation that triggers splashing sounds
  • Annual outdoor unit bracket inspection catches vibration issues early

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a rattling noise from my aircon mean?
Rattling is almost always a loose component. The usual suspects are mounting screws on the indoor unit housing, the fan blade locking screw, the front panel clips, or debris that has fallen into the outdoor condenser housing. Less commonly it can be a compressor mounting bolt that has loosened over years of operation. Most rattling issues are resolved in 30 to 45 minutes with tightening or cleaning.
Why is my outdoor unit buzzing?
A persistent buzz from the outdoor unit usually points to an electrical component. The most common culprits are a failing contactor relay that controls the compressor, loose or corroded terminal connections that are arcing slightly, or early compressor motor winding issues. Buzzing deserves a prompt diagnosis because electrical faults can cascade into compressor failure or, rarely, create a safety risk.
My aircon is making a grinding or scraping sound. Is that serious?
Yes, grinding is the most urgent noise category. It usually indicates worn bearings in the fan motor, either the indoor blower or the outdoor fan, where the lubricant has dried out and metal surfaces are now in direct contact. If left unrepaired the motor can seize completely, turning a cheap bearing job into an expensive motor replacement. Stop running the unit on high fan speed and book a same-day diagnosis.
Occasional clicking at startup - should I worry?
One or two clicks at startup are normal as the relays engage. What is not normal is repeated continuous clicking without the compressor starting, which typically points to a failing capacitor, a faulty starter relay, or a compressor problem. If your aircon clicks but does not cool, WhatsApp us on 9051 7637 for same-day diagnosis.
My aircon is hissing. Is that a refrigerant leak?
Possibly. Mild hissing at startup and shutdown can be normal refrigerant flow through the expansion valve. Persistent hissing during operation, particularly from a specific joint or service valve, is more likely an actual refrigerant leak. We use calibrated pressure gauges and an electronic leak detector to distinguish between normal flow sounds and real leaks during our diagnostic visit.
Can noisy aircon cause problems with my HDB neighbours?
Yes, and we see complaints regularly. Compressor vibration, rattling condenser fans and loose mounting brackets transmit noise through shared aircon ledges and into adjacent bedrooms. In older HDB blocks this is particularly acute because units sit closer together. We install anti-vibration rubber mounting pads, torque the outdoor bracket bolts properly, and ensure the unit has adequate wall clearance. The fix is usually quick and resolves the complaint.
