Running But Not Cooling Is Diagnosable

Few things are more frustrating in Singapore than an aircon that hums along happily while the room temperature refuses to budge. You can hear the fan, feel a breeze at the vent, and watch the set point on the remote drop, but the bedroom stays at 30 degrees Celsius and sleep is impossible. This is one of the most common calls we take at CoolX Aircon, and the encouraging news is that almost every cause is identifiable and repairable, as long as the person in front of the unit works through the problem methodically.

CoolX Aircon was founded in 2016 by Mr Kok Wai Keong, who brought 15 years of prior cooling industry experience into the business. Over 2,400 completed projects later, our team has developed a repeatable diagnostic ladder that saves customers the cost of speculative parts and speculative gas top-ups. The aim is simple: find the actual fault on the first visit, quote it in writing, fix it properly and back the repair with a 90-day workmanship warranty.

The 6-Point Diagnostic Ladder

Rather than starting with the most profitable repair, we start with the cheapest and most common cause and work up. Here is the ladder in order.

1. Airflow and Filters

The simplest cause, and the first thing we check. When filters are choked with dust, less air crosses the evaporator coil, less heat is transferred per minute and the supply air drifts back towards room temperature. In humid Singapore this can happen faster than homeowners expect, particularly in households with pets, shedding rugs or nearby renovation dust. Filter cleaning is part of our standard service and is often the only intervention needed.

2. Evaporator Coil Condition

After airflow we check the coil itself. Months of operation coat the fins with an insulating layer of dust, biofilm and organic growth. That film blocks the thermal transfer between warm room air and the cold refrigerant inside the coil. The supply temperature rises, cooling times stretch and the compressor runs longer to achieve less. A chemical wash restores the coil to near-new heat transfer performance and is often far cheaper than the parts the customer was expecting to pay for.

3. Refrigerant Charge

If airflow and coil are fine, we connect calibrated pressure gauges and measure refrigerant pressure against the factory chart for your specific model. Singapore split systems use R32, R410A or in older units the now phased-out R22. A unit running under-charged cools poorly, ices up in patches and runs the compressor hard. A unit running over-charged also cools poorly and can damage the compressor. Either way, the fix is to locate the leak, seal it and restore the charge to specification. Simply topping up a leaking system is not a repair, and we will not quote it as one.

4. Electrical and Sensors

Next we test the electrical path. A faulty thermistor sensor tells the PCB the room is already cold, so the compressor cycles off early and cooling drops. A weak capacitor prevents the compressor from starting under load on hot afternoons. A damaged fan motor runs slowly and reduces airflow over the coil. These components are all testable with a multimeter in a few minutes, and all are quick inexpensive replacements when faulty.

5. PCB Control Board

If the electrical path checks out individually but the unit still misbehaves, the fault may be in the PCB that coordinates everything. PCBs are particularly vulnerable after lightning storms and grid switching events in older HDB estates. Symptoms include blinking error lights, compressors that never start, fan speeds that ignore remote commands and random shutdowns. We test PCB inputs and outputs systematically and can source most common Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Fujitsu boards within 1 to 3 working days.

6. Compressor

The last and most expensive cause on the ladder. A failed or failing compressor cannot circulate refrigerant, which means zero cooling no matter how clean the coil or how perfect the charge. We test windings, starter relay and capacitor and give you an honest read on whether compressor repair, compressor replacement or whole-system replacement makes more financial sense for a unit of your age.

Quick Checks Before You Book

Before you pay for a diagnostic visit, these free checks solve the problem in roughly one in five calls:

  1. Remote mode - Cool mode, not Fan or Dry, and set point below room temperature
  2. Outdoor unit running - If only the indoor fan is active, the outdoor compressor may be tripped
  3. Filter condition - Visible dust can be rinsed under a tap as a short-term measure
  4. Circuit breaker reset - 30 seconds off, then back on, clears transient PCB errors
  5. Ambient overload - If the room is in direct afternoon sun and the aircon is undersized, even a healthy unit cannot cope

If none of these resolve the problem, WhatsApp us at 9051 7637 and we will slot you in for a same-day or next-day diagnosis.

Repair or Replace: Honest Guidance

Our technicians are trained to give honest advice even when it means walking away from a repair. Replacement is usually the better call when:

  • The unit is more than 10 years old and still on R22 refrigerant
  • The compressor is out of factory warranty and has failed
  • Repair costs exceed roughly half the price of an equivalent new system
  • The unit has required 3 or more separate repairs in the last 12 months

A replacement 5-tick inverter system brings a fresh manufacturer warranty, lower SP utility bills and years of reliable cooling. We are an authorised service and installation partner for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic, and we can quote a replacement for you free of charge during the same visit.

Why Choose CoolX Aircon

Structured Diagnosis Not Guesswork

Our technicians follow a repeatable 6-point ladder rather than throwing parts and refrigerant at the unit. That approach has served over 2,400 Singapore projects since 2016.

NEA Certified Refrigerant Handlers

Low gas and frozen coils are two of the top causes of a warm aircon, and both need NEA-certified R32 or R410A handlers with calibrated gauges. Our team holds current certification.

Honest Repair or Replace Advice

If the economics point to replacement rather than repair, we say so. Founder Kok Wai Keong built CoolX Aircon on the Cool Earth philosophy of restoring equipment where sensible and retiring it cleanly where not.

What Our Customers Say

"Bedroom aircon stopped cooling overnight. I WhatsApped CoolX in the morning and a technician arrived by lunch. Faulty thermistor, fixed on the spot for a fair price. Cold again within the hour."

— Linda W., Tampines

"Three other companies had quoted me gas top-ups that did not last. CoolX traced an actual leak at the evaporator coil, repaired it and restored the charge properly. First honest diagnosis I have had in years."

— Kevin H., Bukit Merah

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common reasons an aircon runs but does not cool?
In Singapore we see these causes most often, ranked by frequency: low refrigerant from a slow leak, heavily soiled evaporator coils, blocked filters restricting airflow, faulty thermistor sensors feeding wrong temperatures to the PCB, PCB control board faults after power surges, and compressor or capacitor failure. Our diagnostic ladder checks each in turn.
Should I try anything before calling a technician?
Yes, a few quick checks can save a call-out. Confirm the remote is on Cool mode and set below 22 degrees Celsius. Check that the filters are not heavily clogged. Confirm the outdoor unit is running, not just the indoor fan. Try a full power reset at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds. If none of these resolve the issue, book a diagnosis.
How much does it cost to fix an aircon that is not cold in 2026?
The diagnostic fee is S$40 to S$50, waived if you proceed with the repair. Repair costs depend on root cause: a gas top-up after a leak repair is roughly S$80 to S$160, a thermistor replacement runs S$80 to S$120, a capacitor replacement is similar and a full compressor repair varies widely. We always quote in writing before starting.
Can a dirty aircon alone stop cooling?
Yes, and we see it often. Heavily soiled evaporator coils and blocked filters can cut cooling capacity by half or more. In those cases a chemical wash from S$80 per unit restores cooling with no parts replacement. Quarterly servicing prevents the buildup reaching that stage.
My aircon cools at night but not in the afternoon. Why?
Typically one of two things. The system is running close to the edge of its capacity so any extra afternoon heat load tips it past its limit, which usually points to low refrigerant or dirty coils. Or the outdoor condenser is located somewhere that gets hot afternoon sun and cannot reject heat efficiently. We can diagnose which applies during a visit.
Is it worth repairing a 12-year-old unit that is not cooling?
Usually no, and we will tell you so. Units over 10 years old often use phased-out R22 refrigerant, the compressor warranty is long expired and repair costs can exceed half the price of a new 5-tick inverter. We give an honest repair-versus-replace assessment and can quote a free installation if replacement is the sensible call.
